Do Something

Have you ever heard a song that made you feel like the author has been listening in on your very personal conversations with God? I just did. It doesn't happen to me often, but when it does there's a very sweet sense of relief in knowing I'm not alone. It's very encouraging.

I woke up this morning
Saw a world full of trouble now
Thought, how’d we ever get so far down
How’s it ever gonna turn around
So I turned my eyes to Heaven
I thought, “God, why don’t You do something?”
Well, I just couldn’t bear the thought of
People living in poverty
Children sold into slavery
The thought disgusted me
So, I shook my fist at Heaven
Said, “God, why don’t You do something?
He said, “I did, I created you”

I’m so tired of talking
About how we are God’s hands and feet
But it’s easier to say than to be
Live like angels of apathy who tell ourselves
It’s alright, “somebody else will do something”
Well, I don’t know about you
But I’m sick and tired of life with no desire
I don’t want a flame, I want a fire
I wanna be the one who stands up and says,
“I’m gonna do something”

We are the salt of the earth
We are a city on a hill
But we’re never gonna change the world
By standing still

If not us, then who
If not me and you
If not now, then when
Will we see an end
To all this pain
It’s not enough to do nothing
It’s time for us to do something

Matthew West Do something 2014

When I stopped demanding that God do something miraculous to fix all the pain I saw in the world, when I stopped questioning his sovereignty and I started to realize that he made me for this moment, I started to do something and my whole life changed. Now I know if God never gives me another good thing in my life I have been infinitely blessed to have done this, to have been a part of all these lives, to have been used by him to make one person's life a little better. .

I'd love to know what somethings you are up to. Even if it's a secret desire in your heart, that you think is silly or might never work, but when you dream at night you think of it and your heart soars. I would love to pray for you, support you and encourage you the way you all have done for me. I would love to help you bring concrete ideas to fanciful dreams and share with others what you are doing as you strike out to do something.
