Inspiration is all around us—and sometimes it comes from the most surprising places!
It was early March here in Gilbert, Arizona, and the weather was already creeping toward 100 degrees. After last summer’s record-breaking heat—34 days over 110 degrees!—I was already dreaming of cooler places. I pictured myself working underwater all summer, creating magical photos in the pool instead of sweating in the sun.
Luckily, Arizona has two things in plenty: heat and pools! So, I started asking around my photography groups about underwater camera cases. I wasn’t sure how well it would go, but I found the Ewa-Marina camera bag—a great, affordable option for underwater housing.
The amazing KP was the very first person to jump into this new adventure with me. The camera case arrived on Thursday, and by Friday afternoon, we were testing it out in the pool. KP is a pro when it comes to underwater portraits. As a professional model, she had all the patience I needed while I learned the tricky new challenges of shooting underwater.
We split the session into two parts—mermaid portraits to bring my underwater dreams to life, and then some fun portraits to let KP’s artistic side shine.
The deep blue colors of the pool were stunning, and the backlighting from the late afternoon sun made everything glow. After just one session, I was completely hooked on underwater photography. I’m so excited to see what magical moments we can create underwater this summer!
