We knew it would be the hardest season of all to pull off, after all, when you live in the valley of never ending sunshine, it’s hard to capture the cold, white bareness that is Winter. It only took Jenny (owner of Rhythm and Motion Dance Studio) and I minute to decide that we would have to leave the valley and head up north to find snow and aspens to do this season justice.
This season had me puzzled when it came to styling. If you’ve followed my work for long you’ll see I’m a lover of color and brightness and warmth in my images and I knew we wanted to head a completely different direction for this season. We needed something that captured the strength and bare beauty of the winter. Jenny, however, was one step ahead of me and had the entire vision for the session mapped out in her head while I was struggling to picture how all black outfits would work. But the beauty of working with another creative that you truly trust is this: I didn’t have to understand it. I knew I could trust her to put something incredible together and I could show up and capture it.
We had originally planned this session for February but thanks to Flu season had to reschedule when I was unable to make it. We finally lined up all the schedules to make the trip for March. There wasn’t much snow to be found on the ground so we made the most of the ice patches and aspen trees that could be found, slipping and falling and laughing as we went. In the end, I loved the bare, melting snow look more than I would have imagined. The simplicity of the colors in this session, shades of white, green, brown and black, came together to create an elegant and strong look that was perfect for these advanced dancers.
